Sleeping Chinese

Flip through the 700 photos you’ll find at SleepingChinese.com, and you’ll think Shanghai’s suffering through a narcolepsy epidemic: The city’s streets and sidewalks are littered with brazen nappers.

German photographer Bernd Hagemann has been photographing the sleeping citizens since 2002, and his site breaks the dozers down into three categories: “hardsleepers,” who can rack out on any surface; “softsleepers,” who require a bit of cushioning; and “groupsleepers,” who favor the buddy system. Some take shelter in a truck’s undercarriage; others use watermelons for pillows. But the most unsettling sleepers? Four butchers, passed out on a chopping block that’s strewn with red meat.
