MUSIC VIDEO Aesop Rock's "Fast Cars"

A hip-hop artist’s words and images leap from the page — in real time — in a rap video that’s kid-friendly and moms-approved.

“Fast Cars” — from underground musician-producer Aesop Rock (a.k.a. Ian Bavitz) — begins with a school notebook flipping open. We see page after page of text (Aesop Rock is known for his striking imagery and dense, sophisticated flow). The words then morph into Rock’s face (which looks an awful lot like Jimmy Fallon’s) and then his body, which moves through pop-up-book versions of the scenes we hear described: circuses, warfare, and urban jungles. It’s as if we were traipsing through the mind of a hyper-talented, ADHD-riddled grad student who’d abandoned his studies and gone on a musical tear.
