"Freaks"

Being a teenager is hard enough; imagine being a teenager with one eye that’s five times the size of the other. Actually, don’t imagine it — just watch the brilliant mockumentary ad “Freaks.”

Produced by the Australian Director’s Guild Conference (held last month in Sydney), the spot uses various computer-altered fictional outcasts to push the conference’s main theme (“creative collaborations”). You’ll hear from a young man who became an artist because he’s naturally good with his hands — all four of them. And you’ll meet a freaky girl you would bring home to mother: She’s smart and sensitive, and really listens; that third ear helps. The ad’s got a touching message: The quirky, the freakish, and the visionary go hand in hand (in hand). It’s a charming, un-preachy contrast to the sexed-up, airbrushed images of physical perfection with which we’re bombarded daily.
