HUMOR
Middle English Comics

Our nation’s comic-strip characters are under attack — and we’re not talking the decline of print here. Over on the Internets, Beetle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, and Garfield are drawing the ire of online hecklers. Japes for Owre Tymes, a website that translates one strip a day into honest-to-goodness medieval English, is the strangest spoof we’ve seen.

The author — who claims to be a bad-tempered English professor — finds little to like in today’s comics. (Her Marmaduke is a bizarrely antiquated Antecryst.) And yet, there’s something oddly affecting about the site’s marriage of dead language and declining art form: As a character in Japes’ backward-looking update of Crock laments: “Ich misse the olde daies” (“I miss the old days”).
