Futuro

Live from Haugesund, Norway, it’s Scandinavia’s most exciting underground band: the Low Frequency in Stereo, whose new album, Futuro, holds its own beside records by Can, the Pixies, and other noise-rock pioneers.

The Low Frequency’s first three albums built epic drone-and-bash freakouts out of relentless, mostly instrumental jams and squealing feedback. This time out, they’ve discovered their sense of melody: All five members sing on the album. “Starstruck” is a 21st-century update on sixties sitar pop. And the nine-minute “Solar System” sets a jazzy horn section beside acidic wah-wah guitar. You can hear six of Futuro’s eight tracks on the band’s MySpace page — “Texas Fox,” which sounds like a cross between Sonic Youth and ZZ Top, is especially awesome.
