Twenty-one-year-old Mica Levi is a polymath for the ADD generation: a composer who builds her own instruments, writes for the London Philharmonic, and fronts an experimental rock band called Micachu and the Shapes. The group’s debut album comes out in April, but Levi’s Filthy Friends mixtape is available now, and it’s free on MySpace.
Filthy Friends crams 33 tracks into its 58 minutes. Half are by Micachu; the rest, by her associates in the London music scene. Hard-core electronica rubs up against English hip-hop, musique concrète, and snatches of Levi’s fluttery pop melodies. The results sound like a shortwave transmission from the year 2020: hypercompressed, sexed-up, and exploding in four dimensions at once.
