Our Daily Bread is a genuinely riveting documentary about industrial food production and high-tech farming: We flipped for the film in 2006, and this week, it’s available on DVD.
Bread’s Austrian director, Nikolaus Geyrhalter, does without narration or voiceovers; the images speak for themselves. Some are quite gruesome (brace yourself when the chickens appear). Others — of dusty fields and olive trees — are quietly beautiful. A handful may put you off certain foods (like bacon) for life. No, it’s not the easiest film to digest — but it’s intensely important, and impossible to look away from or forget.
