Misadventure on the
high seas

According to the International Maritime Bureau’s Live Piracy Map, this week’s highjacking of a Saudi supertanker is far from an isolated incident.
The map is littered with clickable pointers that provide continual updates on recent high-seas hijackings. (Newshounds will notice that the waters off East Africa are especially busy.) And the targets range from yachts to VLCCs (very large crude carriers) — like the Saudi Sirius Star, which had more than $100 million worth of crude oil on board when it was seized by Somali pirates. As of this mailing, the pirates are still demanding $25 million in ransom.
