TV SHOW
Summer Heights High

Big Love? John from Cincinnati? Lucky Louie?! How does the network that gave us Tony Soprano and The Wire get its groove back? For starters, by poaching the best television show Australia has to offer.

Summer Heights High is a hilariously outré mockumentary that takes place at an imaginary public school. You’ll meet bullies, victims, special-ed kids (who are played by kids with actual disabilities), and teachers (many of the characters are played by the show’s writer, a brilliant comedian named Chris Lilley). You’ll see clichés upended, and story lines that swerve, wildly, when you least expect them to. Take heed: There’s plenty of coarse language, and some of the jokes — involving rape and the aforementioned special-ed kids — are genuinely shocking (many Australians were deeply, and understandably, offended). But if you have a strong stomach and a taste for the wicked and absurd, you’ll want to catch every single episode — starting this Sunday, at 10:30, on HBO.
