Our current television landscape is chock-full of the fantastical: mystical islands, supernatural heroes, Jack Bauer. But how about a show that’s simply about what happens when a boy meets a girl and they fall in love? Gavin & Stacey, a witty, blessedly laugh-track-free comedy, is a monster hit with viewers and critics in England, and it will begin airing on BBC America on August 26.
Gavin is from Essex, England, and Stacey is from Wales, and when they embark on a whirlwind romance, it brings together their very different families and friends. We’re probably not getting all the subtleties of the English–Welsh culture clash, but the juggling of familial eccentricities and the navigation of early love’s stumbling blocks are universal — and funny. Written by and costarring Ruth Jones and James Corden, the show is produced by actor Steve Coogan’s production company, and its rights have already been acquired by NBC. Watch it now, before Gavin’s from New Jersey and Stacey from South Carolina.
