WEBSITE: Can You Guess Where My Accent Is From?

At a time when the nations of the world are gathered to celebrate unity and sportsmanship (and occasionally revivify Cold War–era tensions), it’s worth asking: How much of a melting pot has our planet become? Do borders and national identities mean much in an age of rampant globalization? Have you been watching enough Olympics coverage to distinguish between Estonian and Lithuanian? At least you can settle that last question with this surprisingly challenging Web quiz on international accents.

At each stage, you’ll watch a short video of a speaker reading a portion of the Rudyard Kipling poem “If.” You’ll then be asked which country he or she is from; answer correctly and you may be able to score bonus points by identifying the speaker’s home city or region. Think you can tell the difference between an Australian, a South African, and a New Zealander? Think you can score better than the meager 30 points we earned? No fair if you work for the United Nations or ever bought a Eurail Pass.
