WEBSITE: Cassette From My Ex

Last week, we bade farewell to album covers; today, we pay tribute to a slightly more recent relic of the analog-audio era: the mix tape. While this magnetic answer to the mash note is washed away in a digital tide of MP3s and iTunes playlists, a website called Cassette From My Ex is dedicated to the postmodern DIY philosophy behind the heartfelt if production-intensive mix tape: If you can’t sing or write a catchy tune, your musical taste can itself be a form of creative expression.

Every few days at Cassette From My Ex, a new contributor posts about a mix tape he or she once received from a former flame, providing the track listing as well as the simple or (more often) elaborate artwork that accompanied the tape. Sure, you can hear the actual mix tape in all its scratchy glory, but it’s even more fascinating to read about the failed romances of author Fiona Maazel or musician Claudia Gonson: each a reminder that while everyone gets to enjoy love and music, no one gets it or enjoys it in the same way.
