Current Cinema: In Bruges

Take two Irish hitmen looking for a place to lie low after a horribly botched job, and place them among the quaint streets of the most perfectly preserved medieval city in Belgium. Now imagine everything that could possibly go wrong. And that’s just the beginning of the story with In Bruges, an eccentric, genre-twisting, and thoroughly entertaining film (in select theaters 2/8) that recently opened the Sundance Film Festival.

In Bruges is the feature-film-directing debut of playwright Martin McDonagh (The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Pillowman), whose 25-minute short film Six Shooter won an Oscar last year. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are both charming and believable as they speak in McDonagh’s thrillingly noir patter. Watch for Ralph Fiennes, who shows up as a convincing über-baddie and tries to steal the whole film.
