Ireland spawns another great pop band

CD: Flock

No new rock band from Ireland can escape the inevitable comparisons to U2. But the excellent Irish band Bell X1 invites them, since both band names are derived from mid-century military aviation — U-2 was the famous spy plane and the Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound.

And then there’s the music. Bell X1 is already a phenomenon across the Atlantic, where their record Flock has gone quintuple platinum in Ireland. It will finally be released in the U.S. on February 19, and it’s simply one of the best records we’ve heard in a long time. Part rock, part lush pop — with thoughtful lyrics and intricate melodies — Flock is our early front-runner for best record of 2008.

The four Irishmen are currently on a mini tour of America — you can check them out tonight on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
