WEBSITE "Speechless" campaign |
When it comes to striking in style, the Writers Guild of America has set a new standard. As the union’s incredibly well-documented walkout enters its second month, the guild’s famous friends have put their best supportive feet forward with the “Speechless” campaign, a batch of star-studded public-service announcements.
The brainchild of director George Hickenlooper (Factory Girl) and writer Alan Sereboff, the series of Internet-only shorts feature an expansive list of Hollywood talent — from Woody Allen to Sean Penn to Andre 3000 — acting in a world without scripts. While episode No. 15 packs the most star power (it features Demi Moore and Martin Sheen, among others), the best so far is episode No. 16, in which Patricia Clarkson and Amy Ryan quite literally read the phone book. In the absence of Letterman, Conan, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report, it will have to do.
