APP
Piezo

Piezo is a Mac-only app that lets you record most kinds of audio straight from your desktop.

Developed by a Cambridge company called Rogue Amoeba, the program can record sounds from your Web browser, a satellite radio show, a Quicktime file, or a DVD player. It’s not a full-fledged audio recorder like WireTap Studio or Rogue Amoeba’s own Audio Hijack; corners were cut on the way to Apple’s App Store. (For one thing, Piezo won’t let you grab audio from an application that’s already open; you’ll need to quit and restart to get whatever it is you want to capture.) But WireTap costs $69, and Audio Hijack costs $32; Piezo costs $10—and takes about a minute to figure out. If you don’t need a mess of features but do want to turn your favorite YouTube vid into an audio file you can listen to during your next gym visit, it’s a cheap and easy solution.
