CURRENT CINEMA
Never Let Me Go

For anyone who has read the 2005 Kazuo Ishiguro novel Never Let Me Go, the idea of a film adaptation seems far-fetched as best. But director Mark Romanek and screenwriter Alex Garland have managed to do it; Never Let Me Go (in select theaters 9/15) perfectly captures the novel’s beauty and haunting poignancy.

Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) have been friends since early childhood, sheltered in a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. But as they get older, unsettling truths about their existence are revealed, and they must wrestle with issues like jealousy, betrayal and disillusionment. And that’s before many of the surprises of the film become clear (try, if you can, to stay as spoiler-free before viewing).
