The Internet may be able to play you any music video on demand and commercial free, but can it tell you which ones are good? With the appearance of the new site 120 Minutes, the answer is an emphatic yes.
The site archives material from 120 Minutes, MTV’s flagship alternative music show that started in 1986 and ran for 17 years; it includes songs, videos, interviews and, most importantly, playlists. A community of the show’s fans has meticulously cataloged the music videos played during 585 episodes and linked each one to corresponding Web videos. The result is a clickable mega-playlist spanning almost all of the alternative movement, from UB40’s “Our Own Song” and Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing” to the Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop” and Elvis Costello’s “Oliver’s Army.” These picks and thousands of others are proof that the ultimate music television is now a computer.
