Smells Like 1992 |
Nirvana’s headline appearance at the U.K.’s Reading Festival on Aug. 30, 1992, immediately became one of those legendary concerts that fans speak of reverently as the band’s finest moment, and bootlegs of the show were a staple for any devotee. With the release of Nirvana: Live at Reading on DVD (as well as on CD, with a LP release on 11/17), we can all experience what was truly a bright spot among live music performances.
Thanks to a pristine print and excellent audio sourced from the original multi-track masters, the band indeed has never looked or sounded better. From the moment a remarkably cheery Kurt Cobain, Kris Novoselic and Dave Grohl take the stage and launch into a blistering rendition of “Breed,” all the way through the 25-song set list, the band’s intense energy never abates once. Favorites from their breakout album Nevermind—“Lithium,” “Drain You,” “Polly” and, of course, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”—are all performed, as are lesser-known tracks like “Spank Thru” and “Blew.” Enjoy your total ’90s flashback.
