It’s a challenge to find beauty in the grim scenes of international conflict we see in the news. But it’s impossible to think of anything but “beautiful” when it comes to the stunning shots by Associated Press photographer Emilio Morenatti.
Morenatti, who has won awards for his work covering Afghanistan, Israel, Palestine and Pakistan, takes photographs that bring strife into sharp focus—a feverish rally of Hamas supporters with looming security offers keeping wary watch, a lawyer running from a plume of tear gas fired by police officers in Pakistan. But his work is also infused with humanity: Just witness his haunting portrait of a Pakistani child, peering at the camera amid a sea of burqa-covered women. Morenatti was injured last month in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan. We wish him a speedy recovery.
