No Movies for Old Men

The fall of 2007 was a good time for movies—Michael Clayton, There Will Be Blood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and, of course, Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men. But that wasn’t Joel and Ethan Coen’s only contribution that year; they also wrote and directed the very entertaining short film World Cinema, starring their lead NCFOM actor, Josh Brolin.
World Cinema was part of the Chacun son cinéma, a commissioned anthology to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival. Thirty-six directors (including Gus Van Sant, Jane Campion, Lars Von Trier and David Lynch) participated in the challenge to make a three-minute film. World Cinema, much to its fans’ chagrin, wasn’t included on the Chacun son cinéma DVD, but it is now available on YouTube. Brolin, looking much like NCFOM’s Llewelyn Moss, tries to decide whether to watch Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Climates or Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game at a local theater. This being a Coen brothers’ production, it’s better watched than explained.
