At this point in our nation’s history, we’re all well aware of reasons for gloom: a sputtering stock market, record job losses, a major housing crisis … the list goes on and on. However, Very Short List’s very own co-founder Kurt Andersen has found reasons to be hopeful, too, in his refreshingly optimistic new book Reset: How This Crisis Can Restore Our Values and Renew America (available 7/28).
Comparing the current economic crisis to other troubled times in American history, Andersen concisely and enthusiastically demonstrates how eras of despair actually bring about the greatest changes in the way we live. Sure, maybe we won’t all dwell in McMansions anymore, but isn’t that’s a good thing? After all, we can be greener and less stressed out by debt. And maybe we won’t make easy money on the market—but that’s beneficial, too, since we’ll be spending real money as opposed to the false profits that brought about our current recession. In the end, Andersen’s message is an effective call to responsibility and optimism, comforting and appreciated in these oft-terrifying times.
