Stephen Frears’s second feature film turns 25 this year. It’s called The Hit, and you won’t want to miss out on the Criterion Collection’s deluxe reissue (out on DVD next week).
Terence Stamp plays a mobster turned informant who has spent the past decade hiding out in southern Spain. John Hurt and Tim Roth play the hit men on his trail. Stamp’s character agrees to the trip, but his fatalism unnerves the other men, and the twists and turns that follow will strike a chord with fans of Frears’s 1990 tour de force The Grifters. Criterion’s reissue features commentary from Frears, Hurt, and Roth, a 1988 interview with Stamp, and a digital transfer that does justice to the original’s sun-drenched palette.
