Nixon tapes and transcripts

Luke Nichter’s nixontapes lets you hear 2,150 hours of the 37th president’s secret audio recordings. They’re piquant, to say the least.

The tapes were recorded between 1971 and 1973, while Nixon and his staff dealt with the North Vietnamese, the DNC, and other enemies real and imagined. (The press, the state of Massachusetts, and the Jews also take a drubbing.) On January 26, 1972, an angry president qualified his demand that Henry Kissinger get back to the White House with the following zinger: “As soon as you take care of the ladies.” And a June 9, 1971, conversation between Nixon, Kissinger, and Ronald Reagan was already labored when Reagan upped the ante by asking about the war’s progress. Awkward.
