She didn’t win the Oscar, but Anne Hathaway’s star turn in the poignant and unpredictable Rachel Getting Married (out today on DVD) was one of our favorite performances in 2008.
Hathaway plays Kym, a young alcoholic who leaves rehab to attend her sister’s wedding and soon finds herself getting on her family’s already-fraying nerves. Jonathan Demme, who directs from a screenplay by Sidney Lumet’s daughter, Jenny, hangs back and lets the drama, and the inevitable familial secrets, unfold, and the ensemble cast (which includes Mad Men’s Rosemarie DeWitt, TV on the Radio front man Tunde Adebimpe, and Debra Winger) is uniformly excellent.
