Happy-Go-Lucky

Meet Poppy: the loud, bubbly, utterly endearing heroine of Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky, which comes out on DVD next week.

Played by Sally Hawkins, Poppy is an unmarried schoolteacher whose relentless cheeriness carries her through one calamity after another. What’s wrong with this woman? you’ll wonder before realizing that actually, the answer is . . . nothing. Poppy’s friend tells her that she can’t make everyone happy. “There’s no harm in trying, though, is there?” Poppy replies. Leigh — the creator of dour films like Vera Drake and Secrets & Lies — seems to have taken that advice to heart, and the results are unpredictably delightful.
